Bear Branch fifth-grade students researched and created a meaningful tribute to those who left a lasting legacy during the Holocaust.

After reading the classic Holocaust novel, Number the Stars by Lois Lowry, students researched the life and legacy of a child affected by the Holocaust. During classroom presentations, students shared how they will remember that child and how they want to be remembered when they leave BBE.

In their math class, students collaborated and planned their tribute. They identified a location for the project, measured the area and perimeter, calculated the amount of supplies needed and established a budget to bring their vision to life.

The result was, β€œThe Walk of Remembrance", a pathway featuring individual bricks with sayings, symbols and messages of remembrance. The tribute was installed along the front walkway of the school through combined efforts of students, teachers, and parent volunteers.

This project marks the beginning of the large vision to represent major events in history throughout the campus while encouraging students to consider the impact they want to leave on the school community.

When students return for their senior walk, Principal Sloan Simmons wishes for them to reflect on the legacy left behind and think, β€œthis is where I left my mark.”

β€œOur greatest hope is that we step out of our own shoes and treat others the way we want to be treated,” Simmons said.
