Daron Skero of Skeroโs Furniture was selected as a recipient of the Business-Education Partnership IMPACT Award in recognition of his outstanding support of Humble ISDโs โStudents Helping Veterans: Big Heroes, Tiny Homesโ program.
The Career and Technical Association of Texas (CTAT) award recognizes partnerships that strengthen CTE programs, support student achievement, and contribute to local communities and economies.
On Friday, October 2, Daronโs parents, Larry Sr. and Sandra, accepted the award on his behalf at the Gulf Coast Career and Technical Association of Texas (CTAT) Area 6 Meeting.
Humble ISD nominated Mr. Skero through Gulf Coast CTAT Area 6, a regional network of Career and Technical Education (CTE) administrators serving the greater Houston area. Humble ISD Director of Career/Technical Education Larry Wilson and CTE Coordinators Kimberly Young and Kelli Sharp were on hand for the award presentation.
For the past three years, Mr. Skero and Skeroโs Furniture have provided meaningful support to Kingwood High School and Humble ISDโs Tiny Home Program. Since its launch in 2017, the program has expanded across multiple campuses, giving architecture and construction management students opportunities to design and build homes from the ground up for local veterans experiencing homelessness.
Each home measures approximately 300โ400 square feet and includes a bedroom, kitchen, living space, and fully functioning bathroom. Through this hands-on work, students develop trade skills, leadership, and teamwork while gaining real-world career experience and serving their community.
Skeroโs Furniture has extended that learning beyond the construction site. Students have visited the store to assess furnishing needs, explore options, and meet with Mr. Skero to discuss project plans and design decisions. These experiences help students develop practical planning skills, collaborate with interior designers, and communicate professionally in a business setting.
The Business-Education Partnership IMPACT Award highlights the connection between strong CTE programs and economic vitality. Eligible partnerships must have been established within the past five years, remain active at the time of nomination, and demonstrate a significant or measurable impact on student achievement and the local community and economy.
Mr. Skeroโs commitment to studentsโ interests and career goals exemplifies the value of these partnerships. Humble ISD is grateful for his continued support and the opportunities Skeroโs Furniture provides for students to learn, lead, and make a difference in the lives of local veterans.
