Kingwood Park High School’s SoundScape indoor winds ensemble earned the 2026 Texas Color Guard Circuit (TCGC) Winds State Championship, capping a successful season for the student-led performance group.
“This group is brand new, so it was the smallest group out of all of the groups we saw this season, and yet they placed well above the others because of their attention to detail and unity as an ensemble,” Director Breanna Osbourn said.
TCGC Winds is an indoor performance competition for high school wind ensembles. Performers are evaluated on musicality, pageantry and visual choreography while performing inside gymnasiums and arenas.
SoundScape was created after students expressed interest in participating in indoor winds competitions.
The ensemble’s championship production featured a performance of “The Sound of Silence” paired with American Sign Language (ASL), sound-activated lighting and visual elements designed to explore how music can be experienced beyond sound alone.
Working alongside Kingwood Park High School ASL teacher Darnell Woods, students learned to sign portions of the music and incorporated ASL throughout the performance. Inspired by the school’s strong ASL program, the production sought to create a connection between hearing and nonhearing audiences.
“As we were leaving the venue, several of them were even more proud of how they had touched members of the audience who were crying, signing back to them on the floor and talking to them about how special their show was,” Osbourn said. “Those things, above everything else, seemed to have meant the most to this group, and we couldn’t be more proud of them for that.”
Throughout the season, SoundScape earned first-place finishes at four competitions and a second-place finish at another event before advancing through area competition and qualifying for the state championship.
“When it was announced that they had won the championship title, they were beyond excited,” Osbourn said.
