evolv weapons detection system at BBTC

Humble ISD has installed an Evolv weapons detection system at the district’ Board, Business and Technology Center (BBTC), 20200 Eastway Village Drive in Humble. The Evolv system screens for prohibited items with minimal disruption to visitors. Visitors can simply walk through the system at the building’s front entrance while keeping their keys, wallets and cell phone in their pockets or purse.

Some everyday items, including eyeglass cases, large 3-ring binders, laptops and large electronic devices, metal water bottles/cups, and umbrellas, may trigger a false alarm. Visitors are encouraged to remove these items and place them on a designated table as they approach the detectors to help the process go smoothly.

Humble ISD first began exploring a weapon detection system in the summer of 2024 as a proactive safety measure. After a successful demo in September 2024, Humble ISD installed the Evolv system at Turner Stadium and piloted it at Humble High School. Later during the 2024-2025 school year, Humble ISD installed Evolv at all of the district's high schools and at the Community Learning Center. The district’s goals include equipping all middle schools with the Evolv weapons detection system by the end of the 2027-2028 school year.

At the BBTC, the system began screening visitors during regular office hours on April 9, 2026. The system also will be used to screen visitors attending School Board meetings, beginning April 14, 2026.

Evolv has been carefully tested for safety and meets all the necessary government safety standards. The technology uses extremely low-frequency radio waves that are safe for everyone, including pregnant women and babies.

However, FDA guidelines for anti-theft and metal detection systems suggest that anyone with implantable or wearable medical devices, like pacemakers, talk to their doctor or the device manufacturer for specific information. Alternative screening can be provided in case of medical need.
