With vibrantly colored skirts and golden-stitched sombreros as a part of their attire, the Humble Elementary Folklórico Club takes center stage.

The music fills the cafeteria and in an instant, students are dancing with flowing movements and coordinated steps as they bring to life a piece of their culture.

“It brings me so much joy to see the kids embrace their culture and roots through dancing,” Humble Elementary bilingual teacher Eirka Gonzalez said. “This club is a shining example of the rich culture and diversity we have here at Humble Elementary.”

In a recent episode of Ask an Expert, Gonzalez and fifth grader Sared Pinon spoke about the Folklórico club.

The idea for the club started three years ago when Pinon wore her Folklórico skirt as a part of her traditional attire to school for one of their “Celebrate Me Days”.

“She performed in front of the entire class and at that moment it sparked the idea of starting this club,” Gonzalez said.

The club was born. Now, three years later the club has grown into fourth and fifth grade groups, which perform at various community and school events in the spring.

“It’s important for me and my family because we keep alive our culture and teach the world our tradition,” Pinon said.

In the Ask an Expert episode, Pinon teaches a step-by-step tutorial to perform a Folklórico Dance. The episode also includes performances by both Humble Elementary Folklórico Club groups.
