Atascocita High School's Mia Maxwell has been announced as the 2024-2025 Gatorade Texas Girls Track & Field Player of the Year.
“I’m incredibly proud of Mia for earning the 2024-2025 Gatorade Texas Girls Track & Field Player of the Year Award,” Atascocita girls track & field coach Karyn Lacour said. “Not only has she shown outstanding dedication, discipline, and talent, but she has also been a true team player, always putting the team first and leading by example. This recognition reflects both her individual excellence and the impact she’s had on the team. It’s been an honor to coach her.”
This marks the second-straight year that an Atascocita High School Track & Field athlete has earned a recognition from the Gatorade Player of the Year Program. Class of 2024 graduate Jelani Watkins, who is now at LSU, was named the 2023-2024 Gatorade Texas Boys Track & Field Player of the Year.
“Mia winning this award is a testament to her hard work and the dedication of the Atascocita High School track & field coaches,” Humble ISD Athletics Director Mike McEachern said. “She is now considered among the elite to have ever ran track & field in the State of Texas. We are proud she calls Humble ISD home.”
In May, Maxwell won the Class 6A State Championship in the triple jump with a distance of 42-feet-2 1/4 inches, which ranked No. 4 nationally. In the running events, Maxwell broke a 17-year-old Class 6A State Record by winning the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.04 seconds. The time ranked No. 2 nationally this spring among high school athletes and No. 3 worldwide in the U20 age group. Maxwell broke the standing record set in 2008 by 12-tenths of a second.
Maxwell was also a part of the Atascocita girls 4x100-meter relay team that took silver and was named the Class 6A Girls Track Athlete of the Meet by the University Interscholastic League.
Recently, at the Nike Outdoor Nationals, the 5-foot-7 sprinter took home the title in the 100-meter dash and added another national crown in the USATF U-20 National Championships 200 final with a personal best of 23.10. That time ranked No. 10 in the nation.
Outside of track & field, Maxwell plays the viola for the Atascocita High School orchestra and volunteers her time with Humble ISD's annual Fill the Bus project.
About Gatorade Player of the Year Program
The Gatorade Player of the Year program annually recognizes one winner in the District of Columbia and each of the 50 states across 12 different high school sports – football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, baseball, softball, and boys and girls track & field – and awards one National Player of the Year in each sport. The selection process is administered by the Gatorade Player of the Year Selection Committee, which leverages experts including coaches, scouts, media and others as sources to help evaluate and determine the state winners in each sport.
