Policies and Procedures

Outside Deliveries

No Third Party Deliveries: A parent may leave a package, such as a forgotten lunch, for the student to pick up from the front office during lunch. Deliveries from outside vendors (such as DoorDash, Grubhub, etc) are not allowed this school year. Thank you for your help.

Absences & Tardies

Whispering Pines Elementary's Official Attendance Time is 10:05 am. Students will be marked absent for the day if they are checked out before or they arrive after the attendance bell. Students will be marked absent half day if they return the same day with a proper doctor's excuse.

To report your child's absence, please call the Whispering Pines Elementary Absence Line at 281-641-2519 before 9:00 am. Leave a message with your child's name, date of absence, teacher's name, and reason for the absence. As stated in the Humble ISD Parent-Student Handbook, a written and/or verbal excuse for an absence is required within 48 hours of the student's return to school.

Students are considered tardy if they are not in their classrooms when the tardy bell rings at 8:00 am. Students who arrive on time tend to feel more organized and ready for instruction. Please remember that late arrivals are a disruption to classroom instruction and are a part of your child's permanent records. They will be recorded on their report cards.

If you are dropping your child off AFTER 8:30am...you MUST come in the building to sign them in. Thank you.

Apple Watch Policy

If the Apple Watch is a version 1 or 2 then students are allowed to wear them as watches since they must be connected through Bluetooth to their phone to have any of the phone capabilities. Apple Watch version 3 must be put in a student's backpack once at school since it has the same functionality as a phone and phones are to be turned off and stored inside backpacks during school hours.

Arrival & Dismissal

Students are not to enter the building prior to 7:30 am or after 4 pm as supervision is not provided. If students are eating breakfast, they will be allowed to enter the building at 7:20 am. Parents should instruct children to come directly to school in the morning. Upon arriving on school property, students must enter the building and not loiter outside. Parents should also instruct children to go directly home in the afternoon.

Birthdays

Parents may provide a birthday treat for their child's class or purchase ice cream from the cafeteria. Individual treats, such as store-bought cookies or cupcakes, can be served in the cafeteria at the end of the lunch period or in the classroom at the end of the school day. Because time is at the discretion of the teacher, parents will not be allowed back during the birthday treat time. To purchase a treat for each student in the class please contact the cafeteria manager.

District policy does not allow birthday parties at school. Invitations to parties outside of school may not be distributed at school. In addition, balloons, gifts, flowers, etc., may not be given to students at school. The front office staff will be glad to hold onto these items until the end of the school day for the students.

Check Out Procedures

If you must check out your child before the end of the school day, please do so through the front office before 2:45 pm. You must provide proper ID each time you are checking out a student. Your child will only be released to those listed as an Emergency Contact in our system.

Recurring check-outs are a disruption to the classroom and your child's learning. Please refrain from checking out your child unless it is for a doctor's appointment or for an emergency.

Dress Code

In accordance with the Dress and Grooming policies of the Humble ISD Parent-Student Handbook, students and parents should keep these points in mind when planning outfits for school:

  • Any form of dress or grooming that attracts undue attention, disrupts school, or detracts from the learning process is unacceptable.

  • Hair must be neat, clean and well groomed. Hair style/color must not create disruptions or distraction.

  • No sleepwear is to be worn at school. (Unless it is a designated WPE pajama day.)

  • No type of head covering, cap or hat is to be worn or brought to school. Sunglesses are not allowed to be worn in the school building.

  • Shorts, skirts, and dresses must be mid-thigh or longer. No "short-shorts" are allowed. Fashions with slits to mid-thigh are not acceptable.

  • Excessively loose or tight garments are not acceptable; all clothing should be appropriately fit.

  • Shirts must be worn so as not to expose the bare chest and spaghetti straps are not allowed. Leotards, halters, tanks tops, and undershirts are not to be worn as outer garments. No midriffs can be exposed.

  • Students may wear earrings. No other piercings are allowed.

  • Shoes must be worn. Steel-toe shoes, house slippers, cleats and roller/wheeled shoes are not permitted. Additionally, at elementary campuses, heels over 1/2 inch and flip flops are not permitted.

  • Elementary students are prohibited from wearing makeup.

  • Exceptions to the Humble ISD dress code due to medical reasons must be approved by the principal.

If the principal determines that a student's grooming violates the dress code, the student shall be given an opportunity to correct the problem at school. If not corrected, the student shall be assigned to in-school suspension for the remainder of the day or until a parent or designee brings an acceptable change of clothing to the school. Repeated dress code offenses may result in more serious disciplinary action in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct.

Emergency School Closing

Occasionally weather conditions make it necessary to close Humble ISD schools for one or more days. Should weather conditions exist that would make travel to and from school hazardous to our students and teachers, a decision would be made to close the schools. The district will rely on contact information on file in Home Access Center to communicate with parents in an emergency situation. Please contact the school if any of your contact information changes during the school year.

Emails will be sent to parents and guardians through SchoolMessenger. Parents and guardians may also opt-in to receive text alerts. Notifications about school closings will also be posted on the district/campus websites.

Forgotten Items

To keep classroom disruptions to a minimum, we ask that you bring all forgotten items to the receptionist. The receptionist will inform your child's teacher that they have something in the office. If you are bringing money for lunch, please take it directly to the cafeteria. If you are bringing money for any other purpose, please take that money to the office to be delivered to your child.

Grading Policy

Lost & Found

All lost and found items are placed in the lost and found area located at the back of the Commons.  Students can look through this for missing items before school or with permission from their classroom teachers. Twice a year, before the winter break and before the end of the year, the unclaimed contents of the lost and found will be donated to local charities. Reminders will be sent out prior to donating.

Make Up Work

Students are expected to make up work missed while they were absent. They will be given full credit for work done that satisfies the conditions of the district policy for make-up work. Students shall be permitted to take tests administered in any class missed because of absence. For any class missed, the teacher may assign the student makeup work based on the instructional objectives for the subject or course and the needs of the individual student in mastering the essential knowledge and skills or in meeting subject or course requirements. A student will be responsible for obtaining and completing the makeup work in a satisfactory manner and within the time specified by the teacher.

Students should expect to do more paperwork than those who were in attendance because it is necessary to make up for classroom experiences missed. The following is offered as a minimum guideline for completing make-up work:

1 day absence - 1 day following return to school
2 day absence - 2 days after return to school
3 day absence - 3 days after return to school
4 day absence - 4 days after return to school
5 day absence - 5 days after return to school

After a student has been absent for three days, the parent/guardian may request make-up work through the appropriate office designated by the campus.

Students absent more than five (5) days must make arrangements with their teachers for making up the work missed within one week (5 school days) after their return to school. Late work guidelines also apply to make-up work. If students are absent on a predetermined due date, the material is due the day the student returns to school.

*When requesting work for your child due to an absence, allow 24 hours for the work to be assembled and submitted to the office for pick up.
*Teachers are not required to give assignments in advance for prearranged absences.

In the event of a severe weather dismissal, an email and/or text message will be sent out notifying parents/guardians.

Bike riders and walkers will NOT be permitted to leave the building and travel home in unsafe weather. Unless you have an alternate severe weather dismissal plan with the teacher, please do the following:

Teacher Request Policy

We know sometimes when a brother or sister has had a great experience with a wonderful teacher we want to replicate that same experience for our next child. However, each child is unique and no experience can be exactly the same for any child. We believe we have assembled the BEST staff at Whispering Pines - committed to ensuring a successful school year for your child and willing to work with you to help your child have a great learning experience! If your child is having difficulty transitioning back to school, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher to share your concerns or our school counselor, Elain Dabney, so they can help make this a positive start for your child. If after 3 weeks your child is still having difficulty, please schedule a conference with your child’s teacher as they want to know how they can best meet the needs of your child and discuss ways to work together with you. After you have met with your child’s teacher, you may contact Wendy Anaya, Principal, to visit further if necessary.

Toys at School

Toys and collector items are not allowed at school. Electronic items, playing cards, and other games should also be left at home. These items may be confiscated and held for a period of time. Students have access to play items at school and we do not want their personal belongings damaged or stolen.

Visiting the School

Parents and others are welcome to visit district schools. For the safety of those within the school and to avoid disruption of instructional time, all visitors must first report to the main office and must comply with all applicable district policies and procedures. When arriving on campus, all parents and other visitors should be prepared to show identification. Visits to individual classrooms during instructional time are permitted only with approval of the principal and teacher and only so long as their duration or frequency does not interfere with the delivery of instruction or disrupt the normal school environment. Even if the visit is approved prior to the visitor’s arrival, the individual must check in at the main office first.

Upon checking in at the front office, WPE visitors will receive a visitor's badge which includes the name and photograph of the visitor as well as the visitor location in the building. Visitors must wear the visitor badge at all times and may only visit the area designated on the badge. Visitor badges should be returned to the front office at the end of the visit so that the visitor can be checked out of the system.

If you would like to have a conference with your child's teacher, please contact the teacher prior to visiting the campus.
