The Humble ISD Instructional Support Center recently recognized Summer Creek High School senior Avery Slaydon for her landscape improvement project that transformed the exterior of the ISC building.
The project began nearly a year ago when the ISC building team discussed ways to create a more welcoming environment. District leaders sought an opportunity to involve students in the design process.
After collaborating with the Career and Technical Education Department, project requirements were shared with FFA programs across the district. Avery Slaydon’s design was selected from among the submissions as the concept that would move forward for implementation.
During her presentation to the ISC building team and Yellowstone Landscaping, Avery showcased the skills she developed through Humble ISD’s agricultural and horticulture programs. She explained how she used AutoCAD software to create her schematic drawings after earning certification through coursework at Summer Creek High School.
Inspired by Humble ISD’s vision, “Where learners ignite, educators inspire, and students grow every day,” Avery thoughtfully selected plants, flowers, and design elements that reflected growth, learning, and community. She worked alongside landscape professionals to mark the design layout, make adjustments, and provide recommendations as the project took shape.
District leaders also recognized Summer Creek High School FFA teacher Kelly Padget for her guidance and support throughout the project.
Following graduation, Avery plans to attend Texas A&M University, where she will study engineering and continue building on the skills and experiences that have already made a lasting impact within Humble ISD.
