Welcome to Maplebrook Elementary!

I'm so excited to meet our new students and families, and to reconnect with those returning to MBE this year!

Here’s a little about me: I'm a proud Aggie with a deep passion for education. This is my 19th year in education! I love helping students grow into the best version of themselves and supporting their social-emotional development through classroom guidance lessons, small group sessions, and individual counseling.

One fun fact—this year I will be joined at school a few times a week by my emotional support dogs, Max and Molly. They are sweet, cuddly, and will bring a sense of calm to our students and staff alike.

I’m here to support your child and help make this a successful and meaningful school year. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if your child needs any social-emotional support.

Looking forward to a fantastic year at MBE!

Counseling at MBE

Guidance Lessons:

A critical part of the school counseling curriculum. These lessons cover a variety of topics at the PK-5 levels. Guidance lessons address content across the academic, career, and personal/social spectrum. These lessons are provided in classroom settings and reach many students at once.

Small Group Counseling:

These counseling sessions are based on student needs. They can be two to six students in size and cover topics that many students experience. Your student will meet with Mrs. Cannon along with other students with similar needs as theirs. Together we'll work on that topic for four to six weeks, meeting for a short period of time each week. If your student is invited to a small group, they will bring home a permission slip that must be signed before beginning.

Small groups will follow three group norms:

   1.  What happens in group, stays in group

   2.  Be respectful of all group members

   3.  Always try your best and PARTICIPATE!

Individual Counseling/Check Ins:

This form of counseling is very brief and solution focused. The goal is to get the student in the right mindset to learn and get back to class. That may be achieved through talk therapy, playing games, reading a book, or just taking some quiet time in Mrs. Cannon's office. This is not the same as a regularly scheduled therapy appointment with a therapeutic plan. If your student needs a therapist who will provide regularly scheduled therapy and a therapeutic plan, Mrs. Cannon has a resource list with community therapy information that can be provided to you.

Consultations: I am available to have meetings with teachers, administrators and/or parents to discuss the needs of individual students. I am here for all students and want to ensure that your child has a productive and positive school year.

Any student can request to meet with me or they can be referred by a teacher, administrator, or parent.  I encourage you to reach out if you have concerns regarding your child.

**Confidentiality** Please note that all information discussed is confidential between me and your child, unless they express that they are hurting themselves, hurting someone else or someone is hurting them.
