Assistive Technology

Mission
Our purpose, in partnership with students, families, and campus staff,  is to assist key stakeholders in determining the need for assistive technology, as well as determining the appropriate assistive technology tools. We will work with key stakeholders to provide assistive technology tools and resources that will help keep students in the least restrictive environment possible. We will support campus staff through coaching and professional development to ensure that they can support student success in using assistive technology. Finally, we will spread awareness about what assistive technology is and how it helps students throughout the school district and the community.

Vision
We envision that every student will have the tools they need to access the curriculum, demonstrate learning, and be effective communicators. We envision staff members who are able to identify the need for assistive technology and are knowledgeable about how to implement assistive technology across learning environments.

Resources

Assistive Technology Resources
The Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act (IDEA) defines assistive technology as "any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of a child with a disability. The term does not include a medical device that is surgically implanted, or the replacement of such device."

Assistive technology (AT) devices may be low-tech or high-tech and tools that students require to meet the demands of their curriculum/ individualized education plan (IEP).

AT devices may help a student with a wide range of activities at school, not limited to: reading, writing, communicating, and organizing/ staying on task.
