Update on Distance Learning: March 17, 2020

Dear Park Lakes Families,

During Hurricane Harvey, our community pulled together to meet challenges. Once again, we are in  complex and unusual circumstances that require doing things in new ways.

Park Lakes Elementary School will continue to provide students with learning opportunities while our campus is closed.

You can expect that, just as face-to-face learning environments vary, learning will look different in different classes. Our teachers are converting their instruction to a remote learning format. By 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 18, information will be made available from all teachers.

During these complex and unusual circumstances, Park Lakes teachers and support staff members are collaborating as grade level teams from home to create and share a menu of academic opportunities to keep students engaged in learning while our school is closed.

Each grade level team, including our specials team, is creating choice boards that will include multiple activities in reading, math, writing, and science. We will be posting these menus of learning opportunities to our school's website later today. We hope that students will have fun while being challenged to continue learning.

Teachers will use their communication apps such as Bloomz, Class Dojo, Remind or a class e-mail to share these learning opportunities with you. We will also send out a school newsletter tomorrow with links to the activities as well as with other important information.

Please be encouraged that we will all work together to support our students and families. We are working to provide meaningful and relevant learning through digital and non-screen activities. We encourage students to incorporate learning, movement or outside play, art, music, as well as some resting time into their days.

We know that this time is stressful for you and your children. We are here for you and are dedicated to making sure that all of our students experience success and are confident in their abilities. Teachers, counselors and administrators are working from home, and are not on campus.  We can be reached by email. The district is working on options for parents to reach school staff by phone.

The third 9-week grading period that was originally scheduled to end on Friday, March 20, has been extended through Friday, March 27. Teachers will work with their students to complete the nine weeks.

Please note: Throughout Humble ISD, high school campuses are closed; this includes all outside facilities. Middle school tracks remain open to the public at this time. Elementary school playgrounds remain open to the public at this time, and playground equipment will be cleaned daily. Despite daily cleaning, families should be aware that the Coronavirus can live on hard surfaces for days. Health officials recommend frequent hand washing and social distancing.

Thank you for supporting Park Lakes Elementary School as we work through these challenging constantly-evolving circumstances.
