Mother and daughter face each other on volleyball court for final time as opponents
HHS volleyball coach Michelle Funderburk celebrates her final game with daughter, Trinity, who is a senior volleyball player for AHS.
In an emotional game, Atascocita High School senior volleyball standout, Trinity Funderburk, faced the Humble Lady Wildcats and her mother, HHS coach Michelle Funderburk, for the last time.
“It’s bittersweet because I get to coach against my daughter one last time, but also sad knowing this really is the last time we will face each other as opponents,” Coach Funderburk said.
The Oct. 23 game was played before a packed crowd at Humble High School.
Trinity, a senior starting setter, has topped 2,500 assists and 1,000 digs during her career as a Lady Eagle.
Over the summer, she was named a second team setter for the All-Vype preseason team and was also named to the Greater Houston Volleyball Coaches Association preseason team.
Trinity said her final game with her mother watching from the opposing team’s bench was emotional.
“It makes me sad knowing this is the last time I’ll face my mom as a high school volleyball player on the court,” Trinity said. “I’m playing the way she has brought me up to play.”

Trinity’s mother is in her 19th season at Humble High School and played volleyball in college. She’s proud of how her daughter conducts herself on the court.
“It’s been amazing watching her grow up and develop into the athlete she’s become,” Coach Funderburk said. “I’m really impressed with the skills she’s developed on the court.”
Trinity is still deciding on her plans after high school, but said she’s interested in possibly pursuing a career in the nursing field.
The Lady Eagles won the Oct. 23 game against the Lady Wildcats, 3-0.
