New COVID Testing Service Coming Soon
Humble ISD is preparing to offer a new service: free, optional COVID-19 testing to students who attend school on campus and whose parents would like for them to be tested. The tests will be available through an online request form. After making the requests, parents will drive their children to a designated off-site medical clinic where the test will be administered for free.
The tests are provided through a partnership between Humble ISD, the Texas Division of Emergency Management, and the Texas Education Agency. The goal of TDEM and TEA is to support families in keeping COVID-positive children from being at school. Under the state requirements, the free tests are available to currently-enrolled Humble ISD students who attend at least one class on a campus.
“We would like to offer a convenient and free solution to families,” Humble ISD Superintendent Dr. Elizabeth Fagen said. “All testing is completely optional. This is simply a service to families who want to know if their student is COVID positive or negative. No student or staff member will ever be required to take a test.”
This testing program uses BinaxNOW tests, which provide results in 15 minutes and are administered using a nasal swab in the front area of the nostril. BinaxNOW tests are an antigen test that identifies the virus by detecting the proteins from the virus. The manufacturer evaluated its tests and found BianaxNOW has a sensitivity (true positive rate) of 97.1 percent and specificity (true negative rate) of 98.5 percent.
It is the goal of Humble ISD to begin offering the free tests the week of November 2. The link to the online request form and details will be emailed to parents when plans are finalized. The district has offered free tests to staff members all school year and is able to expand free tests to students through this program.
