Humble ISD cancels after-school activities through April 30

April is traditionally a busy month for schools -- with carnivals, athletic and fine arts events, team banquets, student activity trips, and more. However this April will be unlike any other in history. All schools in Texas will be closed for at least a part of the month due to COVID-19.

With the uncertainty of our schedule for next month, Humble ISD has made the difficult decision that after-school student activities through Thursday, April 30, are cancelled. An exception is Prom, which will be postponed until an appropriate time can be determined. We also anticipate that YMCA After-School Child Care will be available after schools reopen.

Humble ISD’s announcement aligns with action taken by the University Interscholastic League. The UIL stated that Monday, May 4, will be the earliest that games and contests may resume. The UIL also stated that a reasonable acclimatization period for rehearsals and practices to occur would be allowed. Therefore, some practices and rehearsals in Humble ISD could begin prior to May 4 when schools reopen in accordance with UIL guidance.

Teachers and parents have told Humble ISD that they are facing challenges when planning activities for April. Many activities require contracts with vendors, financial deposits, travel arrangements, and coordinating with multiple parties. This is not feasible while so much remains unknown.

Making this announcement now allows families to adjust their calendars. It also allows coaches, sponsors, and parent volunteers to focus on current needs while our nation navigates through this unprecedented situation.

Humble ISD schools remain closed through April 10 and will reopen when it is safe to do so. After-school activities will not be held through April 30, with the exception of some practices and rehearsals if schools reopen. Everyone looks forward to resuming normal operations in the future.
