Humble ISD students show their musical talent at Carnegie Hall
Humble ISD students participating in the West Lake Houston Community Choir perform with others at the world-famous Carnegie Hall.
Humble ISD students who make up the West Lake Houston Community Choir performed at Carnegie Hall on June 23, 2019. The group included students from Woodland Hills Elementary School, Atascocita Middle School, Timberwood Middle School, West Lake Middle School, Woodcreek Middle School, and Atascocita High School.
The 32 Humble ISD students joined together with other choristers from around the world to form the Distinguished Concerts Singers International, a choir of distinction.
Their musical talents have been noticed nationally, prompting the invitation to Carnegie Hall. “The West Lake Houston Community Choir received this invitation because of the quality and high level of musicianship demonstrated by the singers and the outstanding music direction by director Phil O’Neal, as well as the exceptional quality of their audition recording,” Dr. Jonathan Griffith, the artistic director and principal conductor for DCINY, said. “These wonderful musicians not only represent a high quality of music and education, but they also become ambassadors for the entire community.”
Woodcreek Middle School Head Choir Director Phil O’Neal accompanied the students to New York. He’s extremely proud of their performance and how they represented Humble ISD on a national level. “Humble ISD was well represented in New York City and performed beautifully,” O’Neal said. It was an “incredible opportunity that 32 students in our district received this past June.”
This is Mr. O’Neal’s 16th year as a music educator. He has been with Humble ISD since 2013. He was the 2017-2018 Teacher of the Year at Summerwood Elementary and a finalist for District Teacher of the Year.
