Sharing Hope at Elm Grove Elementary
When Imelda hit the Texas coast, the Elm Grove community was greatly affected by flood waters. Many families were just completing their renovations from the May 7th floods. Elm Grove had not experienced flooding before May 7, even during Harvey.
Yet Elm Grove is a strong community, and many came together to share hugs, help and hope with the families of Elm Grove Elementary School.
On Sept. 20, Strawbridge United Methodist Church met Elm Grove staff members in the parking lot to once again support our neighborhood. SUMC brought flood buckets that included cleaning supplies just as they did in May. Staff members cooked meals for families as well. Throughout the weekend nourishment, flood buckets and encouragements were given to families. Strawbridge also made a large donation in gift cards that were given to EGE families.
“Elm Grove Elementary has had a long standing relationship with Strawbridge United Methodist Church and our families and staff are very appreciative,” said Principal Donna Fife.
On Sept. 26, the community came together to support families with a hot meal. Food was donated for this event. EGE staff, Humble ISD Board Members, SCHS Leadership Class and NHS, The Humble ISD Family, Humble ISD Cabinet Members, Elm Grove PTA, HAAM, Humble ISD Education Foundation, Humble ISD Counseling Department, Pet Ranch, Skeros Furniture, Dave Martin, Houston Food Bank, community members, and Family Time Counseling attended the event and helped with serving food, showing
kindness, providing resources, offering child care and giving support. Skeros Furniture donated multiple furniture vouchers to those families who attended this event.
On Oct. 2 another hot dinner was provided to families. The food was donated through Elm Grove PTA. This event included HAAM, Walgreens, YMCA, EGE staff along with their family members, Texas Road House, Humble ISD Family, and community members. Again resources were available for the families including vaccines, clothing, YMCA scholarships for the fall break, counseling, and food. Hugs and hope were given to all.
On Oct. 3 Elm Grove Elementary School staff welcomed members of Grace Church in Humble who came to provide help for students whose homes flooded. Executive Pastor of Ministries, Mike Acosta, and other church members arrived with hundreds of new shoes, hoodies, sweaters and t-shirts in a variety of sizes, as well as a $50 gift card for each of the students affected by flooding. The shoes and clothing were donated by Vans, and the gift cards were provided by Grace Church. Pastor Acosta said that Grace Church hopes to continue their support of Elm Grove Elementary students and their families. Two volunteers from Congressman Dan Crenshaw’s office, Kaaren Cambio and Viviana Burkett, helped with dispensing the shoes and clothing.
Principal Donna Fife said “Our staff has been working to assure that our children and their families never feel isolated. We want them to feel that they are supported by their school and their community.”
School counselor Juliana Schone said, “All of the many generous donations have provided not only clothes, shoes or gift cards to our students and their families, they have also inspired our students to be kinder and more thoughtful with each other during such an emotional and difficult time for everyone.”
