Summer Creek HS Army JROTC opens mini food pantry to the community
The Summer Creek High School Army JROTC, in partnership with the Houston Food Bank, has opened a student-run mobile food bank on campus. The mobile food bank will provide free fresh and healthy food to anyone in the community who is in need.
After volunteering with the Houston Food Bank, for a service-learning project, Summer Creek JROTC cadets decided they wanted to do more for their own community. The students were inspired by their time at the food bank and wanted to find a way to help fight child hunger and increase access to healthy and nutritious food.
Chelsea Vargas, Summer Creek JROTC Captain, and the rest of the JROTC leadership team reached out to the Houston Food Bank school programs team. Less than a month after contacting the food bank the students were ready to open their mobile food bank. The Summer Creek students worked tirelessly to make their food pantry dreams a reality.
The students received special training from the Houston Food Bank to perform the various jobs that support the market. This includes setting up product for distribution, restocking, and cleaning up the area afterward. The students will operate through a mobile market that brings food to the school in a truck with a large refrigerated trailer.
“We have all successfully completed our school market training and we are ready to serve our community,” Vargas said.
The senior explained that there are no special requirements or eligibility guidelines for the mobile food pantry. “Our long-term goal is for future cadets to keep the mobile market up and running each year. We want to stay connected to our community and this is one way to make sure that happens.”
The student's long-term goal is to make the Bulldog Food Market a permanent fixture at Summer Creek High School. The JROTC student leaders wish to help anyone in the community who is in need of assistance.
The Bulldog Food Market will be open from 1 to 4 p.m. on the 1st and 4th Tuesday of every month until the end of the school year, with the exception of April. The Bulldog Market is located at Summer Creek High School, 14000 Weckford Blvd., in the back parking lot by the Lockwood Rd. entrance. For more information please call 281-641-5462.
