WMS students bring home medals after Texas Renaissance Festival visit

TX RenFest Award

Three Woodcreek Middle School students were recognized for their photography skills during the annual Texas Renaissance Festival.

The Junior High School Journalism - Photography contest takes place each year during School Days at the Texas Renaissance Festival. Secondary students are tasked with photographing specific elements around the Renaissance Festival. Each photo submission had to be free of editing and filters and submitted with a summary about the photo. The categories included general news photography, feature photography, action photography, portrait photography, and fine art photography.

“My students have been exploring several new types of media and they each decided to try something outside of what they know,” Lisa Goboncan, Woodcreek Middle School art teacher said. “They tried something new and were very successful.”

The students joined hundreds of other middle and high school students from all over Texas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma to participate in the annual Texas Renaissance School Days. The middle school students won three out of five awards and received medals for their submissions. Ambeli Vega won first place in portrait photography, Maya Khouw won first place in feature photography, and Abigail Torres won first place in the news category. This was the first time Woodcreek Middle School students participated in the School Days contest.
