Oct. 3, FEMA and the FCC are conducting a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System.

Cell phone users should expect a message beginning at 1:18 p.m. Central Standard Time. The message will read, “THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed.” The message will broadcast to cell towers for about 30 minutes. Cell phone users should only receive the message one time.

There will also be a message broadcast by television and radio at 1:20 p.m. for about one minute.

“It is important that our public safety partners and the residents of Harris County know about this test and why it is occurring,” ReadyHarris.org wrote in a public service announcement.  “This test is an important element in keeping our emergency alert systems relevant and up to date with public safety needs and public expectations.”
