The Humble ISD Community Work-Based Learning program recently honored 43 of their community partners at a community partner appreciation breakfast. The community work-based learning program was created to allow students to use a community business as a learning tool for vocational skills that can be used both at the campus and in the community.

Participating companies provide consistent jobs for students and allow them to be trained for multiple job tasks in their store. Students work with a district job coach to be trained in procedures for their specific job. Job sites vary from Kroger to TJ Maxx.

During the event, both students and teachers thanked individual businesses that have opened their doors to students this school year. Each community partner was recognized and received a plaque and thank you note during the event. Community partnerships are important for students in the program because it helps them learn vocational skills that will help increase the probability of employability.

“It is important to give back to our community partners because they have been accommodating and have welcomed our students into their businesses, Geralyn Sullivan, Humble ISD Transition Instructional Specialist said. “Our community partners are helping produce employable community members and we are appreciative.”

The program not only allows students to work on their social skills and interactions with others but it also serves as an opportunity for career exploration. This broadens the scope of work opportunities and empowers the students to be more independent in the community.
