Humble ISD teachers nominated for National LifeChanger of the Year Award
Humble ISD is honored to have two teachers nominated for a 2017-2018 National LifeChanger of the Year Award. Maria De Veyra, Kingwood High School teacher, and Michelle Potter, Timberwood Middle School teacher, were nominated for a National LifeChanger of the Year Award.
LifeChanger of the Year is an annual program, sponsored by National Life Group, that recognizes K-12 educators and school employees across the country. The program celebrates educators who are making a significant difference in the lives of students by exemplifying excellence, positive influence and leadership. Both nominees are special education teachers and they are two of only sixteen teachers in the Houston area to be nominated.
De Veyra was nominated by a community member who acknowledged De Veyra’s hard work. “De Veyra is a phenomenal, no-nonsense teacher who deeply cares about her students,” the nominator explained. “She takes the hard route by making sure her students learn real-life skills and overcome their personal limitations.”
Potter was nominated by a colleague and was recognized for always putting her students first and seeing their potential."Sometimes, special education teachers are not complimented enough on their efforts, so I would like to nominate her for all her hard work with her special education students," the nominator said.
The LifeChanger of the Year program awards seventeen individual LifeChanger of the Year awards each year. Winners are chosen by a selection committee comprised of former winners and education professionals. To be considered as a nominee, the educator must make a positive impact in the lives of students, enhance their school or district culture, demonstrate great leadership on their campus, possess a proven record of professional excellence, and show commitment to building a nurturing environment that supports learnings.
