Seven Humble Middle School students were recognized at the annual Texas Renaissance Festival Junior High School Journalism - Photography contest. Humble Middle School photography students joined hundreds of students from all over Texas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma to participate in the annual Texas Renaissance School Days.
The middle school students received medals for placing in the contest. David Davila won first place place in news photography, Princess Sanchez won first place in Fine Art photography, Alexas Rocha won second place in Action photography, Illiana Gunter won second place in Portrait photography, Nathalie Garza won first place in Portrait photography, Jazlyn Carbajal won second place in Fine Art photography, and Gabriela Gallardo won first place in Feature photography.
Humble Middle art teacher, Lisa GoBoncan is proud of her students’ success. GoBoncan is currently piloting the photography class at the campus. The students have spent the first half of the school year learning about the history of photography and photography basics. This class is the first time that most of her students have worked with point and shoot cameras.
The students were tasked with photographing specific elements around the Renaissance Festival. Each photo submission had to be free of editing and filters and submitted with a summary about the photo. The categories included, general news photography, feature photography, action photography, portrait photography, and fine art photography. The Humble Middle students won seven out of eight awards.
“I’m excited to see my students passion for photography grow,” GoBoncan said. “Although, the students are just beginning this process I know that they are all excited about learning and getting to know the camera."
GoBoncan believes this contest is the first of many photography submissions they hope to compete in. The students are looking forward to entering larger photography competitions next year. The award-winning photos are located in the photo gallery below.
