On Monday, Jan. 29, Congressman Ted Poe spoke to the 7th grade class at Creekwood Middle School on the events surrounding Texas' Declaration of Independence (1836), battles for independence, the Republic of Texas, and Texas becoming a state. Texas Independence Day is March 2.

After the Texas history presentation, Congressman Poe held a lively question and answer session with students.

Poe also talked about Creekwood Middle School Teacher Jan York and how she led a service project to recognize World War I veterans. That project, begun years ago, will result in our country's first national monument to honor WWI veterans.
