Humble ISD students named Scholastic Art & Writing regional winners

The Harris County Department of Education named the 2016 Scholastic Art & Writing regional winners on Jan. 26. Among the Gold Key, Silver Key and Honorable Mention awardees, 27 Humble ISD students are represented. A total of 8,177 entries were submitted from 18 area school districts and multiple charter schools, private and home schools.

“This year we judged 40 percent more entries, allowing for more opportunities for young writers and artists in Harris County,” Andrea Segraves, Scholastic Art & Writing Awards Regional Coordinator, said. “We thank community professionals who volunteered to judge this unprecedented increase in student entries. We celebrate the support we have from corporations and nonprofits who value the futures of these talented teens.”

Gold Key Awards in art and writing advance to the national level. Winners will be announced in May, and many students will gain the opportunity to attend ceremonies in Carnegie Hall in New York City where Scholastic Art & Writing is located.

The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards provide students in grades 7-12 with the opportunity to showcase their work. The competition’s purpose is to bring outstanding visual art and writing created by the students to a national audience by showcasing the work and encouraging creativity and career development.
