Willow Creek Elementary Student Wins Color Blindness Corrective Glasses in National Competition

Dominic Cardenas, a WCE fourth grade student, saw colors in a new way during his Art Masterpieces class when he put on his EnChroma Color Blindness Glasses for the first time on Dec. 4. His amazement as he eyed the room brought smiles to his parents, teachers, classmates, and media. Dominic, who was diagnosed with color blindness in kindergarten, was chosen as a winner for the Clorox + EnChroma Children’s Eyewear Giveaway among 200 entries nationwide. There are estimated to be 13 million color blind Americans.

 

Excitement built in anticipation for Dominic’s reaction to the class art activity. The students learned about Piet Mondrian, a Dutch artist famous for his simplistic abstract art style, which consist of only straight lines and three primary colors, red, blue, and yellow. His painting, Composition with Red, Yellow, Blue and Black 1921, served as the art inspiration.  

 

Dominic has red-green color blindness, a condition that he says makes it hard to distinguish between red and green colors and purple and blue colors. He is able to identify the differences in these colors through learned recognition as his mother, Jeanie Cardenas, pointed out.

 

“With the traffic light he’s learned to tell the difference in the signals based on the position of the lights,” she said.

 

Dominic spoke openly and knowledgeably about his color-blindness. Although the condition hasn't affected him academically, the competitive golfer said he’s looking forward to improving his golf game.

 

“Sometimes I can’t see the distance markers or the different shades of grass on the golf course.” Dominic said.

 

Even so, his parents say he is already a top-ranked competitor. 

 

“No matter how good you can see, there’s still no substitution for practice,” his father, Chris Cardenas, joked. 

 

His parents are excited about the new opportunities this will open for Dominic. His mother spearheaded the effort in submitting the video for the giveaway since learning about the eyewear from a poster at the eye doctor. The giveaway asked kids to speak about their dreams for the future, including what they hope to achieve and invent and what they want the world to be like.
