Woodcreek Middle School 8th grader Miguel Lomas is a national winner in the Do The Write Thing Challenge. He and and Woodcreek Middle School Language Arts Teacher Christina Clegg spent a week in Washington D.C. in this initiative for the National Campaign to Stop Violence.

This contest gives middle school students an opportunity to write about youth violence and what they think should be done to change the culture of violence.

Miguel Lomas was selected as one of two national finalists from more than 14,000 entries in the greater Houston area. He was honored at the Houston/Harris County recognition ceremony, where he read his essay in front of all of the other local winners plus their families and teachers.

The two national ambassadors from each participating jurisdiction were honored at a recognition ceremony in Washington, D.C. During this National Recognition Week, more than 2,000 national ambassadors had the opportunity to present their views on youth violence to national leaders.

Miguel, his family, and teacher Christina Clegg participated in National Recognition Week in Washington D.C. At the national recognition ceremony, the middle school students were able to meet and interact with celebrities such as Common, Harlem Globetrotters, American Idol contestants, and more. The finalists spent the week meeting and presenting the book of their essays to various leaders. Activities included a private tour of the Capitol Building, the Supreme Court, the Library of Congress, and meeting dignitaries from Kuwait.

The Do the Write Thing Challenge is an initiative of the National Campaign to Stop Violence a 501(c)(3) non-profit, non-partisan, organization composed of community, business and governmental leaders who have come together to reduce youth violence in communities across the United States.
