Foster Elementary student Barrett Kenny is a Student Hero

Texas State Board of Education Chair Barbara Cargill named Foster Elementary fifth-grader Barrett Kenny as the first recipient of the Student Hero Award at the May 12 Humble ISD School Board Meeting.  There will be only 15 Student Heroes chosen each year in Texas.
“The SBOE decided to start a program that looks at students, not academically because we do that a lot, but to recognize students for their heart. There are several bills in the legislature mandating that character education be taught, but I would say that it’s already being taught in Humble ISD,” said Cargill.

“Losing my brother has been the hardest thing to have to go through,” said Barrett, who considered his best friend Landon like a brother, “You never really get over the loss. Thankfully, I have found a way to keep Landon close to me by racing in his honor."
SBOE Chair Barbara Cargill represents about 1.7 million Texans residing in Brazos, Grimes, Houston, Montgomery, Polk, San Jacinto, Trinity and Walker counties, and parts of Harris County. Cargill was appointed by former Texas Governor Rick Perry to chair the Board since Feb. 2013.
