Humble ISD’s innovative summer camp is first place in nationwide Magna Awards program
“The Magna Awards recognize school districts and their leaders taking bold and innovative steps to improve the lives of their students and their communities,” according to a statement from NSBA.
Humble ISD Board of Trustees members accepted the honor during the Best Practices for School Leaders Luncheon at NSBA’s annual conference in Nashville.
“Our Board and our District are immensely proud to be honored among the nation’s very best,” Humble ISD Board President Robert Scarfo said. “Programs such as Camp Nobis Est demonstrate what we’re really about, and that’s ensuring every student has every opportunity to succeed.”
Camp Nobis Est was created when Humble ISD middle schools began to notice an increase in discipline referrals and decreases in attendance and test scores. The week-long summer camp was established to teach rising sixth graders about work ethic, goal setting, and teamwork. Camp Nobis Est has helped middle school students succeed, and gave rise to a similar camp, Keep Calm and Lead On, to prepare rising freshmen for high school and peer leadership.
“Our affective education is essential in educating the whole child,” Superintendent Dr. Guy Sconzo said. “The summer camps do an amazing job of laying down that foundation and giving our students resources to be successful.”
An independent panel of school board members, administrators, and other educators selected the winners from nearly 250 submissions. Other first place winners in the Magna Award’s Over 20,000 category include Arlington Public Schools, Arlington, Va.; Des Moines Public Schools, Des Moines, Iowa; Paradise Valley Unified School District, Phoenix, Ariz.; and Vancouver Public Schools, Vancouver, Wash. The grand prize winner was ABC Unified School District’s Parent Leadership Academy and Conference. All of the 2015 winners are highlighted in a special section in the April issue of American School Business Journal.
Additionally, Humble ISD and all winning districts are featured on the NSBA website and can be found here: http://www.nsba.org/newsroom/american-school-board-journal/magna-awards/additional-winners/camp-nobis-est
