Kingwood High School English teacher, Ryan Calhoun, was in shock when the Great Day Houston crew entered his classroom. Mr. Calhoun was surprised with the Star Furniture Red Apple Award. This award is presented by Great Day Houston (KHOU 11) and Star Furniture. Each month they receive dozens of nominations from students, parents and colleagues expressing how awesome their favorite teacher is. The award is to recognize teachers who make a difference in students’ lives by going above and beyond the call of duty in the classroom to inspire students.

Mr. Calhoun was nominated by his student Josh Green. Green is a senior at Kingwood High School and was inspired to nominate Mr. Calhoun because he recognized that his teacher has a special gift to help his students become interested in English. “He takes us and our imaginations on a journey, and for that reason I am interested in the subject and learning in his classroom is fun,” said Green. Green had the pleasure of having Mr. Calhoun as a freshman and now as a senior.

Mr. Calhoun has been a teacher in Humble ISD for five years, which have all been at Kingwood High School. He currently teaches both Freshman and Senior English. “The seniors I taught last year were the first group of freshmen I ever taught, and it made me really proud to be able to see them graduate, said Calhoun. This has become his favorite teaching assignment because he gets to see the students come in as freshman and then see them leave as seniors after graduation. Mr. Calhoun is also the co-sponsor of both the senior class of 2015 and Key Club.
