Maplebrook Elementary wins CREST award for counseling excellence

MBE Crest Award Winners

Congrats to Maplebrook Elementary for being named one of 56 Texas schools to earn the Counselors Reinforcing Excellence for Students in Texas (CREST) award through the Texas School Counselor Association.
The award programs evaluates campus counseling programs in seven areas, including Principal’s Support, School Counseling Advisory Council, School Climate and Safety, Student Results, Major Achievements, Community Partnerships and Resources, and Parent Collaboration. The CREST award signifies MBE as a leader in counseling excellence.  School Counselor Dr. Jana McLain credits a supportive campus environment as a key factor in this recognition.

“Our administrative team truly values affective education,” said McLain. “Principal support is the first step in creating an effective comprehensive school counseling program. We’ve been able to introduce programs such as Helping Hands, No Place for Hate, Love and Logic parent books studies, Random Acts of Kindness week, and college/career readiness activities.”

In addition to these programs, McLain and MBE Principal Annette Nevermann emphasize the importance of a strong school-home partnership and nurturing environments to support student achievement.

“We educate our parents on effective strategies when working with their children,” said McLain. “Student achievement is profoundly affected by their social and emotional well-being. If a student comes to school angry, sad, crying, or frustrated, it is extremely difficult to teach academic lessons. That student needs a safe place to express their concerns and develop coping skills.”
