Dr. Jane Nelson, former principal at three Humble ISD elementary schools, passed away on Saturday, Nov 1, at her home. A role model for other women, she was one of the first women principals in this district. Dr. Nelson was the principal who opened Woodland Hills Elementary in 1975 and Oaks Elementary in 1979. She also served as principal of North Belt Elementary School, retiring from Humble ISD in 1995. Dr. Nelson was a member and former president of Humble Area Retired Teachers Association (HARTA). She served as first president of the Mu Pi chapter of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, an honor society for key women educators. She also was a member of the Texas Silver-Haired Legislature. “Jane was a trailblazer and a role model for women,” said longtime Humble ISD teacher Gayle Sampley, whose children attended Oaks when Jane was principal. “She was fiercely earnest in her dedication to the schoolchildren of Texas, and a true Texan with a capital T!”
