Timberwood Middle School Inaugural Parent and Community Academy
Timberwood Middle School offers insight into cyber safety, human trafficking, and tips for success in middle school at their first Parent and Community Academy. The monthly academy will provide parents of Timberwood Middle School students and community members an opportunity to play an active role in their student’s lives.
The Academy began with the Director of Freedom Place, Shandra Carter, speaking about human trafficking. Carter talked to academy goers about human trafficking and keeping children safe. She explained to parents that, “There is a misconception that this is just an international problem but it actually a very real local issue to pay close attention to.”
Following Carter’s presentation Timberwood Middle School eighth grade counselor Lori Shortis shared tips for parents to help their student succeed in middle school. The Tips for Middle School Success included, resources to stay organized, setting goals, talking to your teacher and helpful websites. View presentation.
The Timberwood Middle School counselors also provided key social media terminology and discussed apps that could potentially be dangerous for students if not monitored by parents. Popular apps listed were Omegle, KiK Messenger, Yik Yak and Vine. View the social media app presentation.
If parents were unable to attend the Parent and Community Academy they had the opportunity to watch and ask questions on periscope. Periscope is a video streaming social networking service.
