Humble ISD CATE Center offers a new Sports Medicine Class
Pictured above are Amy Walker, Robert Maniscalco and Stephen Williams and some of her sports medicine students.
Humble ISD now offers a new Sports Medicine Health Science Tech Class. The class is open to all 11th and 12th grade students in the district. Students participating in this new STEM program have the opportunity to work in practicum sites like local physical therapy clinics, hospitals and even working in the high school athletic training rooms.
Career and Technology Education Center teacher Amy Walker is the Sports Medicine Health Science Tech class instructor. Her two sports medicine classes are made up of 25 junior and senior students from around the school district.
Ms. Walker said, “I’m excited to be able to provide my students with the opportunity to have hands on learning experiences. I have been able to create a whole new curriculum and I look forward to helping my students grow this year.”
The sports medicine program is designed for students interested in fields such as, orthopedic surgery, physical therapy, fitness, athletic training and many other sports medicine related fields. Students will be able to take the information they’ve learned in class and apply it in real situations.
Memorial Hermann Outreach Athletic Trainer, Robert Maniscalco said, “This program is an opportunity for students to apply what they are learning in the classroom. This is great practice for the students especially if they find themselves in this profession later in life.”
Mr. Maniscalco added, “Students will be able to share a different perspective on what they are learning through their rotations because each student’s rotation experience will be different from day to day.”
Humble High School junior, Zyan Williams is already thinking about his future in the healthcare field. Williams said, “The sports medicine class is a gateway into what I would like to do as a career. I’m looking forward to taking what I’m learning in the classroom and during my rotations to college.”
Before signing up for the Sports Medicine class each student must complete the entry level Principles of Health Science course with an 80 or higher. There is a selection process as this is a limited seating course. Interviews and selections will begin in late March/early April.
Kingwood Park senior Rachel Robare said, “My plan is to major in athletic training and I signed up for this class to get real life experience. I want to follow the athletic training career path and this class will be the perfect start.
Stephen Williams, Operator of local Calvary Urgent Care – Will Clayton is happy to be a part of the sports medicine class rotation.
Mr. Williams said, “We’ve opened our doors because it has become a natural habit to help students who are interested in this career path. It is critical that students selecting health care as a profession have an opportunity to experience it before making a commitment. This field is a passion not just another vocation.”
The Sports Medicine students will rotate through 18 different locations this year. Rotation locations include:
