AMS Technology Student Association students bring joy to local shelter

Atascocita Middle School Technology Student Association (TSA) students donated a custom built bench for The Door women’s shelter. TSA is a technology based organization that promotes careers in STEM fields.

At the beginning of the school year the TSA students decided they would like to complete a service learning project to help the community. TSA advisor, Stephanie Tompkins reached out to Patti Tristan Coordinator of The Door, an area domestic violence shelter, to ask how the students could help them.

Tristan responded, "it would be nice if their clients could have a bench to sit on while enjoying the outdoors." The students jumped at the opportunity to build a bench for The Door.  Through this service learning process students have learned how construct a wood product from start to finish. The students were able to document their process and build a smaller prototype to the Technology Student Association State Competition in Waco in April.

“The kids learned a lot about the manufacturing process while building the bench,” Darrell Tompkins, TSA advisor, said. “Several of them had never worked with the tools before but they are happy to have been a part of this service learning project.”
