Atascocita High School teacher Carlee Kennedy named District Teacher of the Year and wins new car donated by Bert Brocker of Texan GMC
The Humble Independent School District Teacher of the Year Carlee Kennedy of Atascocita High School won a 2017 Buick Encore at the Fun In Sun themed Humble ISD Education Foundation Gala on April 7. Bert Brocker of Texan GMC sponsored the vehicle.
Kennedy is a dance teacher and directs the Atascocita Patriettes Dance Team at Atascocita High School. Through a community service project with her drill team members, Kennedy developed a class at her campus that provides special education students the opportunity to perform at school pep rallies and sports tournaments. The Stars and Stripes dance class allows students to learn modified dance routines, social skills, and teamwork. “I feel like my biggest accomplishment in education is the relationships I have with my students and the positive influence I have had on them,” Kennedy said.
The Elementary Teacher of the Year and District runner-up, Tara Rogers of Atascocita Springs Elementary, received a getaway trip to a home in Islamorada, FL donated by Christian Eldringhoff and a first class roundtrip flight for two, donated by United Airlines. Rogers teaches fourth grade at Atascocita Springs Elementary.
Rogers believes in creating authentic learning experiences for her students so she introduced Red Nose Day to her students. Red Nose Day is a global project that raises money to help kids living in situations of poverty to be safe, healthy, and educated. Through this project her students were able to impact other children’s lives across the world. “The feeling of being able to provide students with an authentic learning opportunity has been so inspiring,” Rogers said.
In the spring semester, Humble ISD schools choose a Teacher of the Year for its campus. The 2017-2018 Finalists and District Teachers of the Year were chosen by a district selection committee based upon essays and interviews in March. All District Finalists were honored on stage and walked away with a new iPad, donated by parents and alumni Jonathan and Carrie Brinsden, and iPad cover, donated by LogoStuff.
