115 student athletes participated in the annual district-wide Integrated Athletics Track Meet at George Turner Stadium on March 21.
The event kicked off with the presentation of colors by the Humble High School JROTC, an a capella rendition of the National Anthem by the HHS choir, a performance by the Humble High School Wildcat cheerleaders, and a welcome from Humble ISD Trustee Robert Sitton.
The stadium rang with cheers as each school’s athletes ran through the inflatable tunnel. Throughout the event Humble High School students passed through to cheer on the athletes in between classes.
Students competed in both track and field events. Events included running and standing long jump, shot put, 50-meter, 100-meter, 4x100 meter relay, etc. After each heat students were awarded 1st-6th place and at the end of the event 63 students won 1st place gold medals.
The track meet was complete with an announcer, concession stand, and jumbotron. Over 35 student volunteers, four adaptive physical education teachers, and an Integrated Athletics coach from each campus took part in making the event a success. In a few weeks the athletes will start preparing for their next tournament. For the first time the students will be participating in a district-wide soccer tournament in May.
“It is new territory for everyone because soccer is not a sport offered by Special Olympics, so it will be brand new for many of our athletes,” Integrated Athletics Coordinator Robin Pullen said. “We are looking forward to our new adventure!”
