    January 14, 2022

Monday, 1/17 is a school holiday.

    1/17/22 School Holiday

    Letter to 5th Grade Parents

Dear Deerwood Families of Students in Fifth Grade,

In 2022-2023, the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR®) will undergo a redesign, which will include adding writing to reading assessments, capping the number of multiple-choice questions, and adding new item types (e.g., drag and drop, short and extended typed responses, etc.).

On February 16, your child will be participating in an online stand-alone field test, which will not impact grade promotion. Humble ISD will not receive any field-test data or students’ scores from this administration. The Texas Education Agency (TEA) will use this data to make adjustments to next year’s STAAR assessment.

In addition to the February stand-alone field test, Humble ISD will assess STAAR between May 10-20, 2022.

In the coming weeks/months, you will receive more information regarding specific test dates.

    Thank you,

    Macaire McDonough-Davies

Personalized counseling services continue this nine weeks as our young learners identify their strengths, explore their personal interests, and set achievable goals. We will learn and practice goal directed behaviors to become more effective communicators, leaders, and collaborators.

    First Grade PBL

Deerwood's very excited first grader students have launched their Project Based Learning unit! They love animals and wanted to figure out how they could help homeless animals in our area. They have decided to collect food for a local animal shelter. First grade students will collect dog food on Monday, 1/10. Please support them and their project by brining cans or bags of dog food to the front lobby on Monday.

In response to concerns about traffic on Forest Garden Drive, we are meeting with district safety personnel to review our arrival and dismissal procedures. We will communicate any recommendations and changes.

Lake Houston Family YMCA Bridge Fest Family Fun Run will be held on Saturday, February 26th. Deerwood will once again have a team and families can sign up to participate under our campus name. Register with Coupon Code HISD to receive $10 off your total registration in January. The top two elementary schools and the top two secondary schools with the highest number of people who register to participate in a race will receive a portion of the funds raised for new PE supplies.

Participation in Bridge Fest supports Y programs that positively impact the Lake Houston community. Proceeds benefit the YMCA annual campaign, which helps everyone, regardless of age, ability, income or background, have the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive at the Y.

    Emergency Preparedness Drill

    Dear Parent(s) or Guardian(s):

Thank you for choosing Deerwood Elementary to provide educational services to your child. We are proud to be able to serve you and your student(s) and we will continually strive to provide a safe learning environment for them. The safety and welfare of our students and staff are our highest priority here at DWE. In order to maintain a safe environment in which our students can develop and learn, it is necessary that we practice our emergency and crisis response plans throughout the school year to help our staff and students know what to do in an emergency.

In the coming days we will conduct a school-wide Lockdown DRILL. Our lockdown procedures were developed with the assistance of Humble ISD police, local police, and fire officials as recommended by the United States Department of Education, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

We feel that open and clear communications with parents and students are important to enhance our safety efforts and wanted you to know about the upcoming lockdown DRILL. If you have any questions regarding any of our safety drills or other safety concerns, please contact the school office. The telephone number is 281-641-2200.

    DWE Storybook Character Parade

The Deerwood Elementary Storybook Character Parade is back! This favored event will take place on Friday, October 29, 2021, starting at 8:30. For this event, students can dress up as their favorite story book character as they parade around the school. Families are invited and encouraged to watch, take pictures, and cheer from the front of the school. The front drive will be blocked off from traffic after morning arrival.

Students may choose any character from an appropriate, elementary school book that they love reading. The costumes should not be scary. Costumes may not have a mask, weapon, or contain blood. Costumes must meet school dress code guidelines.

You do NOT have to buy anything new for this event. Instead, be creative – make paper ears, a hat, or wear the clothes the character would wear. Students should come to school dressed as the storybook character and should be able to go to the restroom independently while in character.

Students should either carry the book or make a large name tag stating the title of the book

and the character they are portraying. Students who do not wish to wear a costume may make signs or props to carry during the parade representing a favorite book character.

Thank you for joining us as we continue this tradition with our Deerwood students! We can’t wait to see all of your storybook characters parade around the track!

We also thank you for kindly not blocking residents’ driveways by the school.
