The SCHS Choral Department is designed to offer a variety of vocal performing opportunities for our students throughout the year which allows them to enjoy creating music as well as being musically, emotionally, and intellectually challenged.  All choirs focus on students’ music reading skills and singing technique primarily through group singing.  Team building and developing relationships within each choir and the department throughout is an important aspect to our artistic medium.  In addition to developing their musical strengths, students foster self-discipline, cooperation, and commitment as they are Building BONDS, Developing INTEGRITY, and Demonstrating EXCELLENCE through MUSIC!

  • TMEA All-State Choir Students

Congratulations to our 5 All-Staters who performed at the TMEA All-State Choir Clinic and Concerts last week in San Antonio!  Kayla Cistrunk (11), Khye Colbert (11) and Stanford Smith (12) sang in the TMEA All-State Mixed Choir, and Shelby Dotson (11) and Sofia Plata (12) sang in the All-State Treble Choir. SCHS is one of only a handful of schools in the state of Texas with this many All-State students.  This is a testament to these students and to all the students in the Choir program who encouraged and challenged one another this year and in previous years to give their best at all times.

  • Summer Creek High School students compete at Area auditions for the Texas All-State Choir

    SCHS Area Students

Summer Creek High School students Kylee Abshire (9), Reese Haines (12), Chris Padua (12), Sofia Plata (10), and Edward Porras (11) will compete at the Area Round of the TMEA Texas All-State Choir Auditions this January. The process for auditioning is virtual this year.  Students will have an opportunity to record their audition from January 9-13.  Auditions will be judged on Saturday, January 16 and results posted shortly after.

This is the third and final round of a very competitive process that began in September with over 1000 students in our region alone.  Only the top 5 in each voice section were selected to represent TMEA Region 33 at this round.  They will compete against 3 other regions for the coveted All-State Choir spots.  Summer Creek High School is proud of all the students who began this process so many months ago and wish these students the best of luck at this final round!  Good luck students!

    Awards

Every student is important in our Choir.  Every student has something unique to offer and makes that group what it is.  We wish we could give every student an award, but we can't.  There was also much debate because there are many students we could give these awards to.

We have 4 type of awards: Student Awards (students vote), Director Awards, and Scholarships and other Honors.  Congratulations students!  I will email you with your own personalized certificate this week!  Seniors - make sure you put your personal email into Charms since your school email addresses will no longer be valid.

  • Congratulations!

The Summer Creek High School Chorale had a great performance at the annual University of Houston Moores School of Music Invitational Concert on Monday, November 4 at 7 PM.  Summer Creek is one of only 4 choirs that was invited. This event is very selective featuring only the best choirs in the Houston area.  It is a huge honor to be invited by Dr. Betsy Weber, an internationally renowned director, who is the Professor and Director of Choral Studies at U of H.  She is also the Director of the Houston Symphony Chorus.

The Summer Creek, Woodlands, Cy-Fair, and Clear Creek high school varsity mixed choirs each sang a short program of 3 songs, and Dr. Weber closed the concert with the wonderful U of H Concert Chorale.

  • All-State Choir Students

After 4 rigorous rounds of All-State Auditions, with the final round on Saturday where students competed against schools as far east as the the Louisiana border, as far north as Huntsville, and as far west as Spring Branch ISD, we had 5 Choir students selected as All-State Choir Students.  This is the most we have ever had in 1 year, and the most of any school in our Region!  Other notables are that we had 2 1st alternates, and Kayla Cistrunk was 1st Chair in her Alto 2 room!

All of our 11 Area Candidates who competed today are amazingly talented and have outstanding work ethic!  Through this process, they have consistently encouraged one another to succeed - the Bulldog Way! I am happy for these All-Staters, but very proud of ALL 11 students that made it to compete at the final round on Saturday!

These students will be singing in their respective All-State Choir at the Texas Music Educator's Conference (TMEA) in February.

  • Spring 2020

During the 4th 9 weeks, the SCHS Choir students were taught this song in chunks using teaching videos each week and demo tracks that Mr. Horton and I created.  These are the students who learned the song and submitted their videos in a timely manner.  I'm very proud of them.  We couldn't have a real performance, and most of these students didn't really need to turn anything in because their grades were so great for the 9 weeks.  They did it because they believe in the message of the song and for the love of music. They were working on this song throughout April, during the height of the COVID-19 scare, when we all banded together and social distanced as a united cause.  Remember that context as you listen.  Powerful words!

I need to give a great amount of credit to Mr. Horton who edited everything (audio and video).  This song was extra tricky for this setting because the accompaniment doesn't provide a clear beat at the beginning so it took a lot of work to line up everyone's singing.  Mr. Horton (having never done anything like this before) took the challenge head on.  Great job Mr. Horton!
