I am the Speech Language Pathologist at WPE. I received my Master's Degree from Baylor University and have been working with children and adults with communication disorders for over 40 years - Yikes! I believe that for a speech therapy program to be successful, the carryover of speech goals must occur in both the classroom and the home. Therefore, I am a big believer in speech homework. We are going to try something new this year. I have purchased paper bracelets and plan to have students choose a target word or language skill that will be written on their bracelet. Parents and teachers will then ask students to say their target word or use the skill in the home and classroom settings.I believe that one of the best things that you can do to build language skills is to read with your child. Parents, I'm talking about YOU doing the reading. Choose a classic children's book and read 10-20 minutes several evenings a week. If you come to a word that your child does not know, look up the definition on your phone and talk about it. Ask questions about what you have read - - Not just who, what, where questions, but ones that make everyone think, ie, "What else could ___have said?", "Why did the character do/say that?", or "What do you think will happen next?" Our great librarian will be happy to help you choose a book that the whole family will enjoy. There are also some great materials and information under "Resources" on this website.
If you have articulation (speech sounds), language, voice, or fluency (stuttering) concerns about your child, please call/email me. I am typically on campus on Tues-Wed-Thurs. Normally I will return most calls/emails within 48 hours. It is going to be a great year!
