• Service Projects for Deerwood Elementary

    2018 - 2019

    2018 - 2019 School Year: Crayola ColorCycle

    Actions: Return used markers to the library.  The bin is by the circulation desk.

    Crayola and schools across North America are banding together to help kids understand the importance of their role in protecting the environment.  Through this, students across the continental United States and parts of canada can collect and repurpose used markers.

     

    October: Meals on Wheels placemats through HAAM and North Carolina Diaper Bank

    Actions: Volunteers are needed for laminating placemats before delivery.  Students will create construction paper placemats.

    Students will create cheerful, uplifting illustrations on 14x18 construction paper to be used as placemats for a local Meals on Wheels organization.  

     

    November: Operation Gratitude -- Treats for Troops November 1st - 3rd

    Actions: Volunteers needed for morning drop off collection.  School-wide collection will be done.

    A school-wide collection of Halloween candy, individually-packaged toothbrushes, dental floss and toothpaste will be distributed to deployed troops and first responders.

     

    January: The Mission Northeast http://www.missionne.org

    Actions: School-wide food drive.  Volunteers will be needed for donation collections at morning drop off.

    A school-wide collection of food and supplies.  Food and supplies collected will be distributed to The Mission Northeast, which has a service area of over 800 square miles.

     

    February: Project Linus www.projectlinus.org

    Actions: Each class makes a no-sew fleece blanket.  Room moms will prepare materials.

    Homemade blankets will be provided to children in need. 

     

    March: Citizens for Animal Protection

    Dog food will be provided to Citizens for Animal Protection.

     

    April: Earth Day Plastic Bag School Challenge (HEB from April 15th - April 30th)

    Action:  Students bring in bags. 

    Deerwood will collect plastic bags from April 15th through April 30th.  The HEB buddy will collect the bags and the school will receive a gift card.  The winning class will get a special treat from HEB.  

    April:  Earth Day Groceries Project (HEB from April 15th through April 19th)

    Students will decorate paper grocery bags with environmental messages for Earth Day.  The bags will be returned to HEB. The store will then use these bags on Earth Day.

     

    May: Be Kind to Animals Month 

    Action: Volunteers needed for dog wash and donation collections during morning drop off.

    DWE will host a neighborhood dog wash on campus.  All proceeds will go to Twyla's Friends.  There will be a school-wide collection of dog food, towels, chew toys, cat litter or any special requests from Twyla's Friends.  CAP (Citizens for Animal Protection) will present information to our students about pet ownership.
