What Does Good Math Instruction Look Like?
It involves good teachers,
an effective math environment,
and a curriculum that is
more than a mile wide
and an inch deep. -
Effective Mathematics Teaching Practices
Establish mathematics goals to focus learning. Implement tasks that promote reasoning and problem solving. Use and connect mathematical representations. Facilitate meaningful mathematical discourse. Build procedural fluency from conceptual understanding. Support productive struggle in learning mathematics.

Changing the Way That Math is Taught: Conceptual Versus Procedural Knowledge
Think of your earliest mathematics educational experience. For me, as well many others, it is probably completing routine, rote math problems
to the point where you really do not know what you are doing, or how it is related to anything mathematical. You are simply following a
predetermined set of rules that the teacher has given to you to solve each problem. There is no way of knowing if you are making mistakes,
or if there is more to the problem than simply computing random digits using seemingly arbitrary information that may or may not apply to
anything in the real-world.
