     Construction

    In May 1917, the School Board of District No. 28 contracted with Oscar F. Holcombe, an architect in Houston, to design a new high school building for Humble, and a new masonry building to replace the wooden Woodward School House.1  

    The construction contract was awarded to the construction firm of Reynolds and Etty.2  $29,000 was spent to construct a 14-room brick high school building (Humble High School) on Higgins Street, and another $9,000 was spent to construct a masonry school house (Woodward School) at Moonshine Hill.3 

    The architect that designed Humble High School and the Woodward School, Oscar F. Holcombe, later quit the construction business and become the Mayor of the City of Houston.  He served 22 years as Mayor, in 11 non-consecutive terms.
