    Early Years

    The first Principal assigned to Elm Grove Elementary was Ruth Binkley.

    The school did not open until December 8, 1978, at the end of the first semester of the 1978-1979 school-year.  From August 1978 until December 8, 1978, the Elm Grove students attended Bear Branch Elementary School.

    The Elm Grove P.T.A. originated while the students were at Bear Branch Elementary School.  The first P. T. A. meeting at Elm Grove was held on February 8, 1979.  Their charter was approved by the Texas Congress and Parents and Teachers on March 19, 1979.

    In April 1979, the Kingwood Garden Club donated  $1,000 towards the purchase of tress and plants for the building.

    Elm Grove Elementary held it's first Spring Carnival in May 1979.  The P.T.A. used proceeds from the Carnival to purchase playground equipment for the school.

    During the 1979-1980 Spring Carnival, the PTA started an auction of donated items.  Ed Brandon of Channel 13 led the auction.

    The school's first Science Fair was held April 24, 1981.

    KTRK-TV personality Don Nelson was the host of the second annual auction held during the Spring Carnival on May 2, 1981.

    The school's first Secret Santa workshop was sponsered by the PTA in December 1981. Funds raised from the program went towards the purchase of a piano for the Kindergarten room, and towards the sprinkler system. That same month, parents planted 15 tress in front of the school.

    In January 1983, the school grounds received a major uplift of plants, shrubs and trees purchased by the PTA.  A new Elm Grove Eagle mascot costume was also purchased that same month.

    Cultural Arts education took a big boost in Spring 1983 when several programs were presented to the students, including performances by the Texas Mime Troup in February, performances by Young Artists, Inc. and the Cimarron Wind Quintet in March, and presentations by local artist Vince Semary in April.

    May Day 1984 was celebrated with a balloon release.  Students put contact numbers on their balloons.  The balloons traveled far, with calls returned from as far away as Georgia.

    On December 15, 1984, the campus held a five-year anniversary celebration.

    The Elm Grove PTA purchased Apple Computers for classes during the 1984-1985 school-year.

    The Fall Carnival (October 1984) included a 10-booth midway, 3 rides, abd two auctions.  The mid-way included a Wheel-of-Fortune, a Ghost Busters booth (complete with slime), cake walk, craft barn, a dunking tank, a spook house, and more.

    Elm Grove's first Principal, Mrs. Ruth Binkley, retired in June 1987.  She was presented with a framed picture that listed the name of every student that had passed through Elm Grove while she was principal.
