Hi! My name is Debbie Zurita and I am so glad to be working with your children.
Though I was born in Dallas, Texas, my family moved to Louisiana when I was 6 months old. So Louisiana is still what I consider home. When I was elementary age I thought I wanted to be a lawyer. My mom would always tell me I was great at persuading her to change her mind!! Then when I was 12 I started babysitting and knew instantly I loved working with kids. I started teaching swim lessons at age 15 and loved that spark I saw in their eyes when they learned something new. I continued to fuel my flame by working at overnight summer camps each summer during my college years. I graduated from LSU in 1993 and have been teaching elementary students ever since. I love spreading that spark in as many hearts as possible. I hope to continue to spark that flame so all my students are life long learners and always up for a new challenge!!
I have lived in the Houston area since 2001 and Kingwood from 2002 - 2018. We moved a few summers ago to the Spring/Woodlands area. I started teaching in Humble ISD in 2001 at Oaks Elementary and moved to Deerwood in 2006. I have a son and daughter. My son is 23 this year and graduated from SHSU in May. My daughter is 15 and a Freshman this year in Conroe ISD. My step-son is graduated from UT in May as well and lives in Austin.. I got married in Spring of 2019 to John Zurita and I am now Mrs. Zurita, but many of my kiddos still call me Ms. Sterling! :))
One of my #1 goals and passion for all my students is to leave our classroom each year a better person on the inside than they were when they walked in. I believe in not only challenging their minds, but also building up their character. I hope their light in their heart starts shining a little brighter each week and continues to glow for a life time !
I look forward to growing with your child this year. Thank you for sharing them with me.
Here are a few pics of my family on our Oregon trip this summer.
