Fifth's Disease is a viral rash that has no specific treatment and no need for exclusion from school, as long as there is no fever. By the time the red cheeks appear, the student is past the contagious stage and most likely had no previous symptoms to alert the parent. The main concern is for those at home and school that are immuno-suppressed, have sickle cell disease or are pregnant. If a family member falls into one of these categories, have them contact their doctor. Here are two links to the Center for Disease Control website on Fifth's Disease: http://www.cdc.gov/parvovirusB19/fifth-disease.html and http://www.cdc.gov/parvovirusB19/pregnancy.html .
