    Dear Deerwood Elementary Families,

Our Deerwood family has experienced a heartbreaking loss this week. The Humble ISD Crisis Counseling Team has been assisting our students and staff as we navigate through our sadness. We know that loss and grief can have a significant impact on our physical and emotional well-being. As an extension of our crisis team’s support, we are inviting parents to join us to hear from the district’s Crisis Counseling Team.

Humble ISD Transportation to Begin SMART tag System

    Dear Deerwood Elementary Families,

Beginning Monday, April 3, Deerwood Elementary will participate in a new program offered through the Humble ISD Transportation Department called SMART tag. This new program is designed to increase safety and security for students riding a school bus to and from school.

All students will benefit from this program, whether or not they ride a bus daily. The use of the SMART tag system at this time will be to scan bus riders boarding or exiting a bus; however, we hope to utilize these identification cards for other uses such as field trips, cafeteria purchases, and library book check-outs. All students are being issued the cards now so that our school will be ready to expand the use of SMART tags in the future.

Students will be issued two SMART tag identification cards by the school. One will be kept in the classroom with the teacher and one will be tethered to the student’s backpack.

School buses will be equipped with a tablet that will read the ID cards to ensure that students load onto the correct bus and unload at the correct stop. While buses are in service, their location and ridership information are available to transportation department administrators to enable them to oversee all school bus activity.

The SMART tag identification cards are not tracking devices. The cards do not store any student information nor emit any student tracking information. The cards are only used to determine if a student has entered or exited a bus.

At a later date, a SMART tag Parent Portal will be made available. Some SMART tag Parent Portal features include:

    • SMART Alerts - parents can receive text messages when your child is approximately 10-15 minutes from their stop.
    • SMART Locate - parents can view a map showing the bus as their child is being transported.

Humble ISD Transportation is excited to offer this new program to Deerwood Elementary School.

    Dear Deerwood Families,

As part of our district wide school safety protocols, Deerwood Elementary
conducted all safety drills this past week to include lockdown and secure the
perimeter drills. The drills were effective in helping us hone our skills in
responding to a potential emergency during the school day.

The staff and students responded extremely well and we are very proud of them.
We encourage you to talk with your child about our drills today and what they
learned. As you know, the safety and security of our students, staff, and campus are
    of the utmost importance.

If you have any questions regarding any of our safety drills or other safety
concerns, please contact the school office at 281-641-2200.

    Sincerely,

    Macaire McDonough-Davies, Principal

Safety Update….The Texas Education Agency requires all school districts to make specific upgrades to exterior doors, and to check those doors every week. Representatives from TEA will conduct random inspections of school doors. Students are instructed to never open a locked door including the doors in the front foyer.

Counselor’s Corner…This 9 weeks, ALL students will learn about and practice skills related to Personal Responsibility.  We will learn to handle our belongings with care, be a respectful leader in a group, and get things done in a timely manner.  Check out DWE Counselor Quarterly News for more information about social and emotional learning at DWE and how you can build Personal Responsibility skills at home.

News from PTA...The PTA is spoiling the DWE Staff, Thursday October 20th.  Please see the sign up genius to help out. An Amazon wish list is in the description as well to make it convenient!  Thank you for you continued support.

Donuts with Ms. Davies….Thank you to the many parents who joined us at Donuts with Ms. Davies yesterday, the presentation is attached. At the conclusion of her presentation, Ms. Davies presented first quarter Distinguished Dolphin Awards to recipients in grades PK-4. Dear Deerwood Elementary Families,

I want to inform you of a medical incident at our school today that required Houston Fire/EMS and Humble ISD Police to respond. At approximately 10:40 a.m., we called 911 due to an individual who experienced a medical issue in the cafeteria during lunch. The individual is expected to fully recover.

Your child may have witnessed the incident and may ask you questions about it, so I wanted to provide you with information about what occurred. I want to commend Houston Fire/EMS, Humble ISD Police and our Deerwood staff for their quick response and professionalism.

    Sincerely,

    Macaire McDonough-Davies

    Birthday Treats

We love celebrating birthdays with shout outs during Friday morning announcements! Parents may also provide birthday treats for the class, if they choose, but must adhere to the following guidelines:

Ice Cream Tickets….Purchasing ice cream tickets for the class is an easy way to celebrate a birthday at school. Parents simply contact Ms. Gracie in the cafeteria (281-641-2208) to purchase tickets which are distributed to the class during lunch.

Store Bought Treats…To provide store bought treats, parents must notify the homeroom teacher 24-48 hours in advance to let them know what they would like to bring.  The homeroom teacher will contact the nurse, who will provide a list of students with documented allergies to any of the ingredients. The teacher will then contact the parents of those students and request that they send an alternate treat for their child.

Homemade Treats…While homemade treats are allowed at school, there is no way to ensure that allergens are not present during the making/baking process. Parents may opt out of homemade treats for their children by contacting their child's homeroom teacher.
