Getting my incoming 9th grader ready for Freshmen Tennis
Posted by KEVIN MCELROY on 6/29/2022 9:30:00 PMDear incoming 9th grader:
One of the most common questions that I receive from freshmen parents is, "How can I prepare my child for Freshmen Tryouts?"
Tennis in Texas is a UIL sport and competes under their rules and regulations. We do not have a PE tennis class at Kingwood High School. When students try out for freshmen tennis...they are actually trying out for the Freshmen Tennis Team to compete against other Houston area schools. So what can you do...1) Have your kids start hitting as much as they can with you, with a friend, against a brick wall, along with attending area tennis camps. 2) Enroll in some tennis lessons and/or drills at Kingwood Country Club, Kingwood Lifetime Tennis, or Walden Country Club. Getting that extra instruction is so beneficial to them and increases their chances to make our Freshmen Tennis Team. 3) PLAY MATCHES...once players have gained the skills to go out and play matches...do it. USTA and UTR have tennis tournaments in the Houston area almost every weekend.
We only keep between 28-32 freshmen on our team and we have about 40-45 freshmen signed up to make the team, so cuts will have to be made. The more your child hits and increases muscle memory in their technique, the better they will be. Please feel free to email me at ksmcelro@humbleisd.net if you have any questions or concerns.

USTA and UTR Tournaments
Posted by Kevin Mcelroy on 6/1/2021 9:00:00 PMCoach Ruiz and I strongly encourage all players to sign up and play in both USTA and UTR Tournaments in the Houston area. These tournaments can be found almost every weekend in areas of Houston like Katy, Clear Lake, Houston, as well as Kingwood and Atascocita. UTR tournaments can be found at UTR.com and USTA Tournaments can be found at playtennis.usta.com
Freshmen and JV Tennis players should be signing up for Level 6 and 7 Tournaments. Players who previously played in Champ and Super Champ Tournaments can sign up for Level 4,5, and 6 Tournaments.
If you have any questions about these tournaments, please feel free to reach out to Coach Mac or Coach Ruiz.
