• Quick Reference about Medications and Illnesses

    If your child has asthma, diabetes, seizures, a life threatening food/insect/environmental allergy or any other chronic illness, please contact the school nurse as soon as possible.  There may be disease specific doctor’s forms required to be on file in the clinic.   

    It is important to communicate this information with your child’s teacher as well.

    If your child needs antibiotics, eye drops, tylenol or other temporary medications during the school day, the medicine must be brought and picked up by an adult through the clinic. A completed Authorization to Administer Medication form signed by a parent/legal guardian must accompany all medications.  Please do not send any type of medication with a student of any age.

    **Cough drops are not FDA approved and should not be given at school. The district is currently reviewing this information; so, at this time, please be prepared for a possible no cough drop, throat drop, etc. rule beginning in the ‘16-’17 school year.**

    In addition to a parent’s signature, a doctor’s order is required for medications that need to be given daily at school, more than 4 times a month or prescribed medication on file for longer than 10 days.  

    All prescription and over-the-counter medications must be in the original container.

    Prescription medications must also have a pharmacy label on the container with your child’s name and instructions matching the doctor’s order on it. All changes require a new pharmacy label with the updated information on it.

    Herbal and homeopathic medications/remedies cannot be administered at school. Enzymes may be given with a doctor’s order.

    Children should be fever free without the aid of fever reducing medication for 24 hours before returning to school.  

    Immunizations must be up-to-date for a child to be enrolled in a public school in Texas. Requirements can be found at www.dshs.state.tx.us or on the district website noted at the top of this page. Disclaimer: The requirements do change now and then. We are notified verbally of the changes to begin the school year; but, they are not in writing on the state website until after September 1st.

    Please update your contact information with the school’s registrar and school nurse when you get a new cell number or other changes occur.   It is important that we be able to contact you if your child is seriously injured or becomes ill at school.  

    *** Please send a change of clothes in your child’s backpack each day.   Muddy playgrounds, cafeteria spills, restroom accidents, etc. are to be expected among all children.
