• Caldecott Reading Challenge (K-2)

The Caldecott Medal is awarded each year to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children. The award was named in honor of nineteenth century English illustrator Randolph Caldecott. How does the reading challenge look at FCE?

The "Caldecott Kids" reading program at Fall Creek Elementary is for students in Kindergarten through Second Grade. The purpose of the program is to encourage children to read award-winning books and appreciate different kinds of literature.

In order to become "crowned" a Caldecott Kid, each student must read 25 Caldecott winners. The books may either be the Award winners or the Honor winners.

Students must keep a reading log of the award winning Caldecott books read or that have been read to them by a parent or teacher. After 25 Caldecott books have been read, students will turn in their log to Ms. Andrew in the Fall Creek Elementary Library. We will "crown" students as a "Caldecott" Kid and they will receive a special crown as well as have their picture taken to be shared through campus social media.

You may print off or make a digital copy of the Caldecott reading log from the link below.

*Thanks to Eddins Elementary in the McKinney Independent School District for this idea and log.

"Each year, 20 books are chosen for the Texas Bluebonnet Award Master List. Schools and libraries around the state participate in the program, encouraging students to read a minimum of five books from the list. In January, students vote for their favorite title. The author of the book receiving the most votes wins the Texas Bluebonnet Award (TBA) which is presented at the Texas Bluebonnet Award Luncheon held during the TLA Annual Conference in the spring" (TLA 2020).

How does the reading challenge look at FCE?

Students in grades 3-5 are invited to read five or more books from the 2023-24 list. A reading log is provided below. When they finish a book, they are asked to record a short Flipgrid video discussing what they liked or disliked about the book. They will be awarded a digital stamp for each book they finish.

Students who earn five or more stamps by January 2024 will be invited to a special celebration!

Please note: Students must be logged in to their My Humble account to access the reading log and Flipgrid channel.
