FAQs
-
Are you ready to retire?
You can call TRS at 800-223-8778 to make sure you are eligible to retire. You can also visit the TRS website for eligibility requirements.
-
I'm eligible, what's next?
Once you’ve determined that you are eligible to retire through TRS, you will need to request a retirement packet from TRS. You can request a packet online or by calling 800-223-8778. Once you receive your packet from TRS, use the TRS Retirement Checklist to make sure you complete the necessary forms. There is one form from your packet that must be presented to the Humble ISD Payroll Department to be completed and sent to TRS: Notice of Final Deposit before Retirement (TRS-7 Form).
This form is included in your TRS retirement packet. Do not try to complete it and take the form, as is, to the Payroll Dept at the BBTC Building (next to Home Depot) on or before the last month you work for the district. The district will complete the form AFTER you receive your final paycheck and will then forward to TRS in Austin. The form cannot be sent to TRS prior to the processing of your final paycheck. For questions regarding the status of your TRS-7 Form, you may contact the Payroll Dept at 281-641-8026 after you have received your final paycheck.
Send the remaining paperwork from your packet to TRS or schedule a meeting with a TRS representative in Austin by calling 800-223-8778.
You can also attend a general meeting with TRS in Houston by contacting Region IV at:- Region IV ESC, 7145 W Tidwell Road, Houston TX 77092; 713-462-7708; www.esc4.net
Keep in mind that you should not rely on retirement information provided to you by a co-worker or another retiree. TRS is the expert on your retirement. Humble ISD cannot advise you on TRS matters. You must verify all your information with TRS directly. -
What does the district need me to do?
Once you determine your retirement date, you will need to complete the online Employee Retirement Form.
TRS requires the date of retirement to be the last day of the month, regardless of your last day of work. Your retirement date with TRS and your actual last day of work with the district do NOT need to match.
You should complete the district’s Employee Retirement Form with the last work day of your duty calendar, or, if not completing your duty calendar, the last physical day you will be at work. If you have questions, please discuss your retirement date options with TRS by calling 800-223-8778 or by checking the Humble ISD Work Dates form.
You will also need to know when you would like your paychecks and benefits to end in order to complete the Employee Retirement Form. You will need to know the answers to these two questions in order to complete the Employee Retirement Form.- Humble ISD allows retirees to receive a lump sum payoff of remaining paychecks at the end of June or to continue paychecks through the end of your regular pay cycle.
- Humble ISD also allows retirees who complete their full duty calendar to continue their benefits through August 31, no matter when the final paycheck is received, or to end them on June 30.
- Humble ISD allows retirees to receive a lump sum payoff of remaining paychecks at the end of June or to continue paychecks through the end of your regular pay cycle.
-
When will my checks and benefits end?
Humble ISD allows retirees to choose the end dates of both your paychecks AND your benefits. If you complete your duty calendar, you can continue benefits through August 31. Doing this will prevent you from having a new deductible for July and August, and then beginning a new deductible in September. Even if you request an early payoff, any remaining premiums will be deducted from your final paycheck to keep you covered through August 31.
Because coaches and other extended calendar positions may have a pay cycle that creates a final paycheck at the end of July, retirees who are unsure of their pay cycle may need to contact HR. -
Will I be paid for my leave time?
If you have a balance of earned, unused state (personal) time or local (sick) time AND you retire through TRS, your unused local sick time will be paid to you (automatically – no form required) at the rate of 1 for 3, 60 days after your final paycheck from the district. Your unused state personal time will be noted on your Service Record and can be “picked up” again if you work for a district in Texas. There is no compensation from Humble ISD for unused state time.
Example 1 for Salaried Personnel: if you retire at the end of your duty calendar you would have earned all 5 of your local sick days for that year, and if you had 25 sick days accrued from previous years, you would have a total of 30 local sick days. Because local days are paid to retirees at the rate of 1 for 3, you would be paid for 10 days (30 / 3 = 10) at your base daily rate, 60 days after your final paycheck. If your final paycheck is at the end of June, you would receive a direct deposit at the end of August for your local days. If your final paycheck is at the end of August, you would receive a direct deposit at the end of October for your local days.
Example 2 for Hourly Personnel: if you are a 5 hour/day employee and retire at the end of your duty calendar you would have earned all 25 hours of your local sick time for that year, and if you had 50 sick hours accrued from previous years, you would have a total of 75 local sick hours. Because local hours are paid to retirees at the rate of 1 for 3, you would be paid for 25 hours (75 / 3 = 25) at your hourly rate, 60 days after your final paycheck. If your final paycheck is at the end of June, you would receive a direct deposit at the end of August for your local hours. If your final paycheck is at the end of August, you would receive a direct deposit at the end of October for your local hours.
If you were on the 226 day (full year) calendar, your earned, unused non-duty (vacation) days will be paid to you on your final paycheck, if possible, or the next check if necessary. Hourly personnel who earn vacation time will be paid for earned, unused vacation hours - up to a maximum of 80 hours - at your hourly rate -- on your final paycheck, if possible, or the next check if necessary.
Humble ISD does not reimburse for state days, whether they are State-Personal or State-Sick (earned prior to 1995).
